Egyptian Vulture – Neophron percnopterus

The Egyptian vulture is now in danger of disappearing altogether from Greece, as there are only 5 pairs left in our country, all of them in Thrace. It is the smallest vulture in Europe, with a wingspan of up to 1.70 meters. It only nests on cliffs, creating makeshift nests where it gives birth to 1-2 young a year. It is a scavenger species that feeds on dead animals, but it also feeds on live insects and small turtles. It is the only vulture that migrates, travelling over 5,000 kilometres on its journey to Africa, where it winters before returning to Thrace in late March- beginning of April to breed.
