Griffon vulture – Gyps fulvus

The Eurasian griffon vulture is the most familiar vulture among the people of Thrace and was once abundant in all the mountains of the region. Today there are only 10-15 pairs left in Thrace and another 15-25 pairs in the rest of mainland Greece. It has a wingspan of 2.30 to 2.80 meters and nests in cliff recesses or rock ledges, where it gives birth to a single young in a year. It is a scavenger species that feeds on large dead animals. Being a social species it forages in group and disperses much further than the cinereous vulture, immature birds might travel throughout the Balkan Peninsula and can go as far as the Middle East and in some cases even Africa.
