Bird nests made with love

After the catastrophic fire of 2023 in the woodland of Evros, it is very important until nature recovers, to support wild animals. Some species such as hares, roe deer, woodpecker will benefit from the instant forest regeneration without support. Some other species though will need our help.

Artificial nests are a temporary solution for the birds to nest at the burned forests that won’t be logged. We thought of making nests for our little fellows the passerines. So, which ones are the passerines? They are small birds with known or strange names as European robin, Eurasian chaffinch, European greenfinch, great tit, Eurasian wren, spotted flycatcher, Eurasian blue tit and hawfinch.

After permission from the competent authorities, we placed the wooden nests in burnt areas of Dadia forest along with feeders. During the next period, we will monitor the success of the project until summer where the breeding period for birds ends.

Our volunteers from the European Solidarity Corps-ESC offered their help in every step of the project. 120 students participated in the informative presentation about small birds and their special songs and prepared many types of nests learning that each one of them can host different species of small birds.

The project is founded by Thenamaris (Ships Management) Inc., included in the program titled: «Impact assessment and measures after the fires in the Dadia forest»
