Lesser spotted eagle – Clanga pomarina

The lesser spotted eagle is an eastern European eagle, therefore its presence in Thrace is important for the species. It makes its nests in the solid forks that occur between thick branches and tree trunks. It feeds on amphibians, reptiles, small birds and mammals, occasionally on dead animals. It migrates to Africa in September and returns to Thrace in April. It is an eagle of fields and streams as it spends most of its time there foraging for food, consequently its nests are often located at the margins between forests and fields.
