Results of the SPBT’s actions from the LIFE for the Black Vulture

The Society for the Protection of Biodiversity of Thrace (SPBT) is participating in the LIFE program titled “Restoration of the Cinereous Vulture population and its food chain in the Bulgarian-Greek border area” (LIFE23-NAT-BG-LIFE Rhodope Vulture). Our main activities include assessing the impacts of wind farms and the effects of the illegal use of poisoned baits in Thrace, with the participation of the SPBT’s anti-poison dog unit, Elzbieta and Dalton.

After two years (July 2024–June 2026) of surveying for dead birds and bats at just 12 of the 276 wind turbines in Thrace, walking within a radius of up to 200 meters around each wind turbine and conducting 170 patrols, the findings can be summarized as follows: 1 buzzard, 15 small birds, and 115 bats. These specific incidents are presented in the publicly accessible database on our website here. Our dog, Dalton, has demonstrated significantly higher effectiveness compared to the handler, Elzbieta, with an estimated detection rate of approximately 90%, while the handler alone achieved only 50%. here. Our dog Dalton has demonstrated significantly higher efficiency compared to the handler, Elizabeth, with an estimated detection rate of approximately 90%, while the handler alone only achieved 50%.

During the same two-year period, Elzbieta and Dalton conducted patrols to address incidents of illegal use of poisoned bait in collaboration with the relevant authorities, the Forest Service, and NECCA. They participated in daily patrols alongside other anti-poison dog units in three incidents of illegal use of poisoned baits in the Evros Delta (March 2025), in the Dadia Forest (March 2026), and in Livaditis (April 2026), where numerous poisoned animals and birds were found. In addition, the SPBT’s anti-poison dog unit conducts preventive patrols in collaboration with the Didymoteicho and Stavroupoli Forestry Offices, which are also partners in the same LIFE program.

In total, in the two years period, our anti-poison dog unit conducted more than 71 patrols, during which 13 poisoned baits (remains of livestock and pieces of meat), 43 mammals (mainly foxes and jackals), and 65 birds of prey (cinereous vultures, griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures, golden eagles, common buzzards and marsh harriers).

Our efforts continue as part of the cross-border LIFE program, with regular visits to the wind turbines and a readiness to address any new incidents involving the illegal use of poisoned baits.
